Devil in the Closet

This illustration was inspired by the short story Lull, by Kelly Link. I was amazed and disturbed by her fantastic story, and based this (and the following painting) on a scene in which the Devil and a cheerleader are hanging out in a dark closet during a party. I loosely played with some of the themes from her story, including time moving backwards.
Cheerleader in the Closet

This illustration is the counterpart to Devil in the Closet, and is also inspired by Kelly Link's Lull. I took the theme and went a bit more abstract, trying more to capture the feeling I got from the story, of something sinister and vaguely sexual in the energy of the space and the characters, as in a dream.

Gatsby, pg.1

The first time I read The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, I loved it and knew I wanted to create something from the inspiration it gave me. I've worked on developing some narrative scenes based on the story, and at the bottom of my blog page you'll see an earlier draft of my idea from the Fall of 2006. In this later version, I have chosen to represent the scene of Gatsby's murder, in which he is shot by George Wilson. I inked it in sepia, and tried to capture a sense of nostalgia, the feeling of looking at an old photograph from the 1920's.
Gatsby, pg.2

This page represents several moments occurring in rapid succession: Gatsby dreams of Daisy, and sees the memory of their kiss playing out in the water; Wilson near by, in his own world of confusion and misery, on the cusp of murderous action; and finally the kiss, Gatsby's last moment with Daisy. I indicated Gatsby's tear drop falling through each of these panels, serving as a unifying motif, and culminating with a ripple through his memory of their kiss in the final panel.
Gatsby, pg.3

Here I combined the image of the gun being fired by Wilson, with the simultaneous moment of impact expressed in Gatsby's face. The blinding light of the gunshot is meant to underscore the blind action taken by Wilson, and the irreversible moment now dwarfing the man who caused the blast. The water surrounding Gatsby's face demonstrates the sudden impact of his murder, and the tearing apart of his thoughts and world.

Bardo

A page from the comic book Bardo. I drew and inked the first issue of this dark, brooding, beautiful story created and written by Deegan Winters. In this page we see the main character, Caleb, waiting to confront the man who murdered his mother.
