Devil in the Closet

This illustration was inspired by the short story Lull, by Kelly Link. I was amazed and disturbed by her fantastic story, and based this (and the following painting) on a scene in which the Devil and a cheerleader are hanging out in a dark closet during a party. I loosely played with some of the themes from her story, including time moving backwards.

This illustration is the counterpart to Devil in the Closet, and is also inspired by Kelly Link's Lull. I took the theme and went a bit more abstract, trying more to capture the feeling I got from the story, of something sinister and vaguely sexual in the energy of the space and the characters, as in a dream.

Rudy is a character I made up when I was about 9 years old. He was originally supposed to represent me, which is probably the reason I've never been able to come up with a good story for him. I can't really explain the head on fire, but there's probably something cool there so I'll keep trying.

I made this poster for a production of the play True West, by Sam Shepard. I produced and co-starred in this production with stand up comedian (and one of my closest friends) TJ Del Reno, at the American Theatre of Actors, in New York back in the fall of 2006. I played Austin, and TJ played Lee.
